Say Yes to What Your Pet Wants

Pet Wants

April 2nd is “Don’t Walk Your Dog Day” which may sounds crazy, if you don’t know the true meaning behind this day. Professional dog trainer, Niki French, wrote the best selling book, “Stop walking your dog.” Last year, Niki launched her first Don’t Walk Your Dog Day on Saturday, April 2, to raise awareness that “not all dogs thrive on daily walks,” according to an interview she did with Chronicle Live.

This day emphasizes the importance that there are many other activities that your dog may enjoy, because not all dogs thrive on walks, and it should definitely not be the only form of activity they get.

Are you wondering what you can do instead of walking your dog? Here are a few options:

  • Play hide and treat seek (Visit your local Pet Wants for all-natural treats and chews)
  • Plan a play date
  • Head to the dog park
  • Let them go for a swim
  • Do an agility course
  • Teach them a new trick
  • Play fetch
  • Make a puzzle for them to solve (The American Kennel Club has a great list of DIY Cognitive Dog Toys here)

During the month of April, Pet Wants is highlighting all the no’s that make you say yes! This week, to go along with “Don’t walk your dog day,” we are encouraging you to say no to a walk, and yes to play, or any other activities your dog may enjoy. Follow us on Instagram or Facebook to keep up with our weekly “no’s” throughout the month of April and to share your photos and videos with us!
